Chateau Franc Mayne 1995
Smoke, licorice, minerals, and lush plums there fill the glass. Silky soft and sweet cherry flavors, well matched with a smooth tannic finish.
After climbing a long road surrounded by Merlot vines, <Château Franc Maine> reveals itself. The vines are rooted in a thin clay soil with exposed limestone rock slopes against the hill of Franc, from which the château takes its name. An ancient road from the Gallo-Roman period runs alongside the vineyards, and the old inns left there indicate that pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela passed this way. The grapes harvested here are equipped with the best technology and facilities they deserve: since 2005, the vineyard has been progressively reformed, with wooden and stainless steel fermenters for the small plots and a renovated cellar for first-year barrel aging. The wine is then slowly aged in a former quarry in the basement, where the stones have been cut out. The Franc-Maine is housed in a modest Gironde-style mansion with a 12-room boutique hotel with natural bathing pool. Everything Saint-Emilion has to offer is in Frans Maine.
